Persephone is the daughter of Demeter. She was kidnapped by Hades and held in the Underworld. She was the cause of Demeter's grief, and during her absence Demeter wouldn't help the crops of the towns, and a terrible famine struck the lives of many. Finally, Hermes, under Zeus's order, convinced Hades to relinquish Persephone. Before Hades did, however, he made Persephone eat a pomegranate seed, which would seal her fate to come back to the Underworld every winter, and emerge every spring. From then on, Persephone would alternate from Demeter and Hades.
